Sweating For Survival
When researching the tradition of the sauna, you may run across some information about their use in Europe as far back as 2000 BC. There is information that suggests the original use of the sauna was about survival. These specially designed areas provided heat, shelter – and because many used smoke – a form of sterilization. Saunas were a way to prevent illness and disease.
Over the years, various cultures have espoused the benefits of a sauna. The Mayans, over 3000 years ago, used sweat houses to help their ill sweat out impurities and a way to cleanse themselves. Even today, many First Nation members use sweat lodges to heal and purify the mind and body. While there may be various benefits of doing sauna, one common thread involves the therapeutic use of perspiration.
Beyond Diet & Exercise
Most people know that nutrition and exercise are essential to maintaining optimal health. A proper diet fuels the body and provides the nutrients it needs. Exercise and activity keep the heart strong and cause sweating which is necessary to regulate body temperature. Not being able to perspire (sweat) can be harmful and may lead to overheating or heatstroke.
Sweat consists of:
- ammonia
- urea
- salt
- sugar
Salt and sugar are by-products of the body breaking down protein. Regarding the need to perspire, some argue that because sweat is made up mostly of water, that it is not a primary vehicle for releasing toxins from the body. Others assert that sweating rids the body of toxic metals such as bisphenol A (BPA), arsenic, and cadmium; some of the heavy metals to which we are more commonly exposed. A 2016 study in China concluded that those who regularly exercise, thus sweat, tend to have lower levels of heavy metal toxins in their bodies.
Possible Health Benefits Of Induced Sweating:
- Increases heart rate and reduces the occurrence of sudden cardiac
- Eases pain through improved circulation and reduction of sore muscles
- Reduces stress levels
- Improves skin conditions such as psoriasis
- Relieves some asthma symptoms
Why Far Infrared Therapy?
The word sauna is used to describe various methods and types. There are those that are low humidity such as wood burning and heated by electricity. What many call a sauna are steam rooms and are very humid, using moist heat.
At Desert Oasis Clinic we employ the Far Infrared Sauna Therapy (FIRS) method. We use electromagnetic lamps that heat the individual (raising the body’s core temperature) and not the room. With infrared saunas, the temperatures are lower than other saunas yet promote sweating as other sauna methods do. Medical professionals report that heat from the FIRS method penetrates up to three inches under the skin and thereby is able to heal deep tissue as it promotes sweating and releasing of toxins.
Far infrared light, the frequency of invisible light that is generated naturally by the sun, is the basis of FIRS Therapy. FIRS is a type of low-energy therapy that uses the heat generated by waves of light at the far end of the infrared spectrum. This safe and natural alternative therapy can be used in the treatment of a variety of health problems such as arthritis, muscle pain, and spasms, joint stiffness.
FIR therapy may also:
- Help the body remove toxins through perspiration
- Reduce tension and stress
- Improve lymphatic flow
- Boost the immune system
- Increase the circulation
